Upward Flame Spread: Heat Transfer To The Unburned Surface

Kuang-chung, T., Turnbull, J., Will, G. and Drysdale, D.D., 2003. Upward Flame Spread: Heat Transfer To The Unburned Surface. Fire Safety Science 7: 117-127. doi:10.3801/IAFSS.FSS.7-117

ABSTRACT

An experimental program was intended to analyze the heat feedback from a spreading wall fire to its unburned surface, one of the two important parameters determining its spread rate. The heat flux from PMMA fires was observed to be higher than those from previous investigations as plotted with normalized flame height (X/Xf). However, very good consistency was performed with another study as a parameter qwo" is introduced with heat flux plotted in another normalization. The averaged heat flux, an important parameter used in upward flame spread modeling, was discussed and suggested to be around 15–20 kW/m2. This is much lower than the commonly accepted 25-30 kW/m2
