ABSTRACT

The gaseous species present above samples of polystyrene containing Sb2O3 and selected chlorinated paraffins, tetrachlorobisphenol A and tetrabromobisphenol A were determined by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry during exposure to radiant heat in the presence of air. SbOC13, SbC13(0H), SbC14, and SbC13(0H)2 were found to be present in greater amounts than SbC13, the species normally identified with the fire retardant activity of Sb-halogen systems. Mass spectral analyses were performed on the vapor above SbC13 in air at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, to identify these species produced from the reaction between Sb203 and the chlorine source.
