ABSTRACT

The propagation of sound from smoke detector alarms through residential buildings has been investigated with respect to the effect of furnishings, type of heating system, and number of closed doors. A simple model representing the propagation path as a series of linked rooms, each modifying the sound level, is described and compared with measured attenuations in 11 houses. The model can be used t o determine the optimum number and location of smoke detector alarms.
