About This Opportunity 

We are seeking a Lecturer with a strong background in Fire Safety Engineering but who can contribute towards our overall teaching and research excellence in general civil engineering and structural engineering.

This exciting opportunity as a Level B Lecturer will see the successful applicant teaching into the undergraduate and postgraduate engineering coursework programs, providing supervision to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, and contributing to the further development of programs within the School. In addition, the role is expected to undertake research in the area of fire safety engineering and collaborate in research with other groups within the School, the wider university and industry.

Key responsibilities will include: 

Teaching

  • Contribute to the development of new programs and course material in fire engineering, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
  • Teach across different settings and actively contribute towards educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods. It is expected this role would be capable of teaching into other core civil engineering courses (e.g., structural engineering).
  • Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, and undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Maintain and improve the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.
  • Provide high quality service to students, including academic counselling and advice.
  • Understand and apply University Rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.

Research

  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.
  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development and conduct of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
  • Contribute as chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in applications for external research funding, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.
  • Maintain an active and effective record of publishing in high quality national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications.
  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.
  • Prepare research publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
  • Recruitment, selection and onboarding of appropriately qualified employees in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Manage employee performance and conduct by providing coaching, feedback and training through probation, annual performance appraisal and regular meetings with employees.
  • Work to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Ensure employees remuneration and benefits are correct and liaise with Human Resources when a change occurs.

  • Actively develop partnerships by fostering relationships with colleagues, industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

This is a full-time (100%), continuing position at an Academic level B. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $108,201.26 – $128,201.75, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $126,595.47 – $149,996.05 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

About You  

Applicants should possess a PhD in the area of Fire Safety Engineering, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.  Research interests in fire may include, fire dynamics, wildland fires, structural fire safety, human behaviour in fire, transport fire safety, material engineering, and other areas of fire safety engineering and science.  Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • Expert knowledge in a relevant discipline and ability to develop innovative research programs in the field of Fire Safety Engineering
  • A growing profile in teaching and research in the discipline area.
  • A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate level across a variety of settings, including small and large groups.
  • Experience in course coordination and contribution to the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in the discipline area.
  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATENuclear Science and Engineering, to enhance understanding of the climactic effects of limited nuclear wars by studying the fundamentals of how large-scale fires are initiated by nuclear explosions, the probability of their occurring, and the expected soot loading produced by such fires.  Responsibilities include carrying out literature reviews of existing work and identifying key disagreements and their origins; researching soot generation in limited nuclear wars, including through the use of code for modeling large-scale fires; validating findings against published research; analyzing data to reach novel conclusions; summarizing research results and present findings at lab meetings and externally to both technical and policy audiences; drafting at least one technical paper for submission to a peer-reviewed journal and one book chapter to summarize key findings for a policy audience; and performing other related duties as required, including work performed at lower levels, when necessary.

As a Research Officer, you will work as a member of the Fire Safety Unit with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities, and will collaborate internally with others as well as externally with stakeholders in the construction industry.

  • Developing proposals for new research initiatives, performance criteria, compliance paths, design guidelines, regulatory requirements, probabilistic and reliability-based models, prevention measures, and innovative technologies and protocols to minimize the impact of fire occurrence on life safety, the environment and the economy.

This position is classified as a Research Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $57,220 to $161,754 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world-renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.  

NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e., above or below the intended level for this position).

Scientific Environment

The professorship will be assigned to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the TUM School of Engineering and Design.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. We seek to appoint an expert in the research area of Fire Science and Engineering with a focus on practice-based research in fire science safety in an academic context. Teaching responsibilities include courses in the university’s bachelor and master programs, explicitly in architecture, civil and environmental engineering as well as electrical engineering and aerospace.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated initial scientific achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international level. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, are prerequisites. We are looking for a talented researcher to focus on fire safety for sustainable construction products and for wildfire fire safety. This postdoctoral fellowship is for a person to be based in the Fire Engineering Research Unit at Stellenbosch University. The successful candidate will split their time between two projects, as discussed below:

1.  Fire Testing of Resilient and Sustainable Building Materials – SFPE Sponsored Project

This project will investigate (a) what emerging sustainable and emerging building materials are being used in practice, (b) what test methods are available and what data we have on such systems, and (c) how their response to fire may necessitate the use of new or modified test methods. In addition, the work will be extended to (d) discuss how existing test methods are applied to systems such as photovoltaic (PV) systems. The result of the project will be the production of White Paper on the topic, in collaboration with fellow team members. 

2. Fire safe African homes on the wildland urban interface (AfriWUIFire)

The successful candidate will collaborate on a project based between South Africa, Botswana and Japan. The aim of this research project is to improve fire resilience of homes and structures in communities located in wildland urban interface (WUI) areas in Southern Africa. This will be done by focusing on the impact of firebrands in property loss. To achieve this goal the objectives of this research are to: (1) Characterize typical structures in South Africa and Botswana, including construction materials, and construction typologies. (2) Identify typical vegetation in South Africa and Botswana. (3) Develop fire experiments to understand the impact of firebrands on different construction features. Experiments will be conducted in Japan and South Africa. An extensive database of full-scale fire experiments from Japan will be used as a basis. (4) Provide scientifically based inputs to develop guidelines for improving fire resilience in communities located in WUI areas. 

The successful candidate will also be involved in co-supervising students (especially those carrying out research to the project), assisting fire engineering postgraduate courses, and generally supporting the work of the fire engineering team. 

Requirements:
– PhD in engineering, preferably in fire engineering. Associated fields may be considered. 
– Research track record.
– Preferred that it is less than 6 years since you obtained your PhD. 
– Good communication and writing skills. 
– Ability to move to South Africa for duration of fellowship. 
– Good academic track record. 
– Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.

– Dates: 1 March 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 31 October 2025 (with a possibility of extension depending on funding availability)
– Fellowship value: R33,000 per month (tax free)

Research Associate in Wildfire Science, University of Edinburgh

University of Edinburgh is looking to hire a post doc to work on a project on firebrand dynamics (generation, transport and deposition) using lab and field approaches. Post-Doctoral Fellows at the University of Science and Technology of China 

We are seeking 2 well-qualified applicants for fully-funded Post-doctoral Fellowships/Associate Professor (by contract) to work on fire safety research in Prof Yu Wang’s group at State Key Laboratory of Fire Science in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Candidates with research experience in WUI/wildland fire, building fire dynamics, or structural fire are all welcome. We would be open to discussing the research direction based on the successful candidate’s research background, interests, and project goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Take a leadership role in a relevant project.
  • Publish high-quality research papers.
  • Help supervise the PhD student in the project.
  • Proposal writing to seek externally funded research grants.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • A Ph.D. in Fire Safety Engineering, Combustion Science, Civil Engineering or any related field.
  • Excellent fire experiment skills.
  • Experience in CFD modelling, thermal-mechanical coupling or computational analysis skills are highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Established track record in scientific publications.

The appointment will be for at least two years, subject to performance and funding availability. Post-doctoral fellows would be encouraged to apply for research funding from USTC, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) etc. Post-doctoral fellows with outstanding academic achievements will be considered favourably for promotion to an Associate Professor position (tenure track) at USTC.
